Meet the Mitchells Reno Tips

Home renovations can be tedious but with the right thought process and support, it can be achievable. Active Home Centre partnered with Jamaican social media influencers, Tami and Wayne Mitchell to bring their dream to a reality. Their previous kitchen featured dark flooring, old finishes, and outdated appliances. It has now been transformed into a bright, fresh, and functional kitchen with lighter tones of whites and greys.

Tami and Wayne shared with us some renovation tips that made a big impact in completing their space.

Project Overview

Property Type: Home

Style: Modern

Renovation: Kitchen, Dining Room, Living Room

Project Duration: 11 Weeks

  1. Be apart of the renovation process

It is best to involve yourself in the process if you have the time and effort to do so. It also helps to work along with the contractor to be clear on all that’s happening and ensure they understand your vision.

2. Have a checklist

Ensure that you have a checklist every day with 3-5 activities that you accomplished and those that need to be accomplished. By doing this, it helps you and your team to stay on a timeline and manage your budget effectively.

3. Use lighting to elevate your space

Lighting is everything and probably the most important finishing touch. Recessed lighting is a good option to use as the main light throughout the space. Use different temperatures of recessed lights in each room to set a different mood. Tami & Wayne opted for a neutral coloured recessed light in the kitchen, which is in between warm and bright. They added cove lights as a modern aesthetic and pendant lights for task lighting above the peninsula.

4. Play with patterns when tiling

Add a bit of variation to your room design by laying your tiles in a pattern. For Meet The Mitchell’s kitchen, the herringbone pattern was used. Other floor tile patterns include:

1) Offset/Staggered Brick

2) 1/3 Offset

3) Grid (Stacked)

4) Stacked (Vertical)

5) Pinwheel

5. Create a moodboard

Creating a moodboard helps you pair together furniture decor and colour themes. Use architectural elements and textures, as well as carpets and flooring options; and layer in specific pieces of art, lighting, and decor to help set the mood.
