Finding Your Style

Our homes now more than ever have become our safe havens and our special place to feel inspired. When decorating your space, we normally have specific colours, furniture, or themes that we consider for the final look - we call that your decor style. Here are a few decor styles to consider:

Minimalist

Minimalist design creates a clean, calming space without being boring. It’s characterized by simplicity and a monochromatic palette with colour used as an accent. It usually combines an open floor plan, lots of light, and functional furniture. It focuses on the shape, colour and texture of just a handful of essential elements.

Designing a minimalist home doesn’t mean you need to avoid decorations and bright colours. The rule is to simply use decorative elements as accents and not overwhelm your home with a lot of things. Similarly, for art, choose one focal piece instead of a group of small ones.

Contemporary

Contemporary design frequently features clean, sleek lines with accents of solid colors which are usually muted neutrals or bold punches of brightness or with metallic accents such as gold or silver. It is simplistic with subtle sophistication.

Spaces with a contemporary design, feature open floor plans and are usually not cluttered. Kitchen and dining rooms, entertaining areas and lounging spaces flow together seamlessly in contemporary homes.

Rustic

Rustic décor places an emphasis on natural and weathered finishes, raw wood, stone, and leather. Design styles like farmhouse or coastal can also be described as rustic. Rustic is the opposite of modern or contemporary design.

A rustic design includes heavy wood furniture made from raw logs, boards, and stone. The colour palette favours more neutral tones, such as browns and greys, as well as some shades of green.

Coastal

Coastal interior features light, bright, and airy environs often dreamed up in vibrant neutrals to soak up the sun's rays. Common coastal color palettes include shades of light blues and greens inspired by the ocean, along with an array of creams and neutrals for a relaxed, yet elegant finish.

Incorporate the spirit of the sea with blue dyed textures or wall art and throw pillows. Layer these with warmer, organic pieces like woven pendants, brown poufs, and natural wood tables to evoke nature.

Farmhouse

If warmth, practicality, comfort, and a relaxed approach to a pulled-together design are on your agenda, modern farmhouse décor is a great option to consider. Warm and inviting, modern farmhouse takes its cues from the provincial for the ultimate mix of high & low contrasts that works beautifully especially for a growing family.

Farmhouse decor usually tends to incorporate mixed match elements of decor as well as texture to add warmth to the space. This helps to make the space not look flat and boring, but more inviting for your family and friends. In an authentic farmhouse, you’d find hand-me-down pieces. So, if you want to create farmhouse style in your house, you need to have one or two pieces of antique furniture.

Bohemian

Boho style is defined by laidback living, ground seating, lived-in linen fabric, and low-hanging vintage pendants that will certainly set the mood and create a cozy atmosphere. Bohemian or boho decorating is for those who want their homes full of life, culture, and interesting items for all the world to see. If you’re into layering textiles or more vintage home accents, this one’s for you.

This décor style allows you to mix patterns and textures that would not go together necessarily in a conventional way. Boho colour palettes include, warm earthy colors, metallic along with deep browns, greens, and grays for base colors. You can then accessorize with saturated purple, fiery orange, and electric blue.

So, what's your style? Whether it’s coastal, contemporary or a mix of all, we have all the home accents and furniture to suit your style at Active Home Centre.
